Helpful Suggestions
If your denture sometimes becomes loose during the day when you laugh, cough,
sneeze or smile then bite down on the denture and swallow to reposition it.
Over time, if you experience discomfort from your dentures or they no longer
fit securely, then you should contact your dentist for an examination. A change
in your health or a significant weight gain or lost may affect the fit and
comfort of your denture.
Contact Your Dentist For An Examination If...
- you start to have sore spots, which could result from your dentures irritating the soft tissue of your gums
- your mouth changes over time which can cause a less secure fit. Your gum ridge may shrink in size causing your denture to become loose fitting.
- your denture chips or breaks or wears down over time. Do not try to repair your denture yourself. Improper repair materials may cause oral care problems.
Your dentist will check the lining of your mouth, tongue, palate, jaws and gum
ridges to ensure that they are healthy and if there have been any changes. If
there have been changes to your mouth shape then your denture may need to be
adjusted to give you back your secure, comfortable fit. The dentist will
determine if there is a need to replace the denture base or to reline the
sides.
Regular examinations Even if you have lost all of your teeth you should
have regular oral examinations of the mouth and oral tissues for oral diseases.

New to dentures?
You're not alone. About 49 million Americans (one in five adults) wear either
full or partial dentures. And while it may seem a bit overwhelming at first,
with a little patience and practice, you’ll soon be enjoying a newfound sense
of confidence and security.
You do not want to have to be conscious of your dentures while you are eating,
talking, smiling or laughing when you are with your family, friends or work
colleagues. A thoroughly clean, well fitting denture will give you the
confidence you want.
The following information will help you adjust to wearing dentures and to continue to have a confident experience with wearing dentures.
What can I expect when I start wearing dentures?
It's perfectly normal to experience any of the following sensations:
- Your dentures may feel large in your mouth
- Your lips may feel like they're being pushed forward
- You may experience a gag reaction, particularly in the back of your mouth
- You may experience an increased amount of saliva
- The denture may feel loose while your mouth muscles adapt to holding it in place
Don't worry - your mouth will soon become accustomed to your dentures, and
wearing them will seem like second nature. Your mouth needs a few weeks to
adjust to holding the denture.
Will dentures affect my speech?
You may have a bit of difficulty with your speech at first, especially
pronouncing "s" and "f" sounds. The following tips can help:
- Practice speaking aloud while wearing your dentures
- Read aloud from a book or magazine in front of a mirror
- Prior to speaking, bite down and swallow to "set" your dentures in place
- If your dentures "click" while you're talking, speak more slowly
With a little practice, your speech pattern will return to normal in no time!
Will I be able to eat my favorite foods?
Absolutely! Just be patient and take it slow, and you'll soon be enjoying your
favorite meals again.
- Start by eating soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow (fish, eggs, cheese, chopped meat, cooked vegetables, ice cream).
- Take small bites and chew slowly.
- Once you feel confident, move on to harder-to-eat vegetables, meat and fruits.
- A denture adhesive such as Super PoliGrip®will help hold your dentures securely in place, providing added comfort and confidence as you learn to eat and speak with your new dentures.
Use of a denture adhesive like Super PoliGrip offers you many advantages, even if your denture is well made and feels like it fits well. Super PoliGrip, denture adhesive, can:
-
Increase the amount of "biting force" you can exert by up to
38%*. This means you can enjoy more of your favorite foods like apples, steak
and corn on the cob
-
Hold securely all day, up to 16 hours
-
Improve denture fit
-
Provide added comfort and help make dentures feel more natural in the mouth
-
Help seal out annoying food particles and alleviate gum irritation they cause
-
Help control denture odor**

Remember, the key to adapting to your new life with dentures is this: Relax,
keep a positive attitude and give yourself time to adjust. You'll soon
wonder how you ever got along without them!
